while some students are whining for Project exam;
I wanted to say thanks to the Unit Coordinator & Lab facilitators.
You guys have put a lot of effort into teaching / labs preparation and that needs appreciation.
One can say that you are being paid for it but you could go easy on us; we would pass everything using IA and be happy but that wouldn't have taught us anything valuable.
For the project Part-2, if we use a little bit of critical thinking and refer to class lectures; specially when there is no penalty for multiple attempts, we can figure out the schema and values of every table.
I did the same; recreated the database on my machine; ran queries and from the output, refined the queries.
So friends; lets stop whining and acknowledge the efforts put in place by the teacher.
Posting anonymously so you wont think I am trying to flatter.
After everything, somehow I agree with you.
I am actually one of the student who complained earlier. However, after reading the justification of not providing schema and data is to prevent student finishing using AI to finish everything it make sense, well it slipped out of my mind the fact that it all can be easily done with AI with schema and data provided, back in my days AI is not a thing so I can't really justify why it is not provided.
The whole uproar is all caused by miscommunication and trivial human errors. Maybe this is the first time this kind of thing is implemented in the class so there are bound to be errors in the process. Technology changes so quickly it forces us to adapt, sometimes even starting over from the beginning and figuring out what went wrong and what went well in the process. Let's just hope this kind of thing will not happen again for the future students.
I think it is important to explicitly stress out that the schema and data will not be provided in order to prevent misuse of AI and with no penalties students are encouraged to brainstorm, explore and find the schema on their own.
After everything being done, Sorry and thank you at the same time.
I second this, while communication was not the clearest and there were some mistakes with the assessment (which is perfectly understandable, we're all human), any issues I had were resolved relatively quickly via email (which was explicitly mentioned to be the method of communication). It is obviously within the students' rights to complain about any issues, but the manner in which it was done was just rude and inappropriate (Yes, paying "thousands of dollars" for the unit doesn't mean you should/get to be straight up disrespectful to the teaching staff).
I do agree. I think there was some miscommunications that caused confusion and conflicting beliefs, but at the end of the day, I think the teaching staff did well to accomodate these issues effectively so that the issues did not disadvantage us. There was obviously an unfortunate misunderstanding for whatever reason about the schema, but I think the teaching team's decision to remove penalties for the SQL quiz ultimately allowed us to individually discover the schemas ourselves through trial and error, as was intended in the first place, lessening the impact of the misunderstanding on the forums.
So I do think that Dr Nasim and the teaching staff's response to the issues yesterday was effective in restoring the integrity of the project, and I believe that due to the adjustments (such as removing the penalty from the quiz), most students would have proceeded fairly and honestly in trying to figure out the schema themselves, removing the need for anyone to check the forum post that exposed it.
This having been the first forum post I've read, I can only agree on the following:
- Thanks to the unit coordinator and lab facilitators
Mehwish is clearly a caring educator, and it is reflected in group communications.
I wrote a [perhaps] harshly worded critique of what you have said and why, but decided against submitting it except for the following points:
- Belittling anyone who has had trouble with the test and implying they cannot apply critical thinking, is a covert form of bullying
- While you might feel empowered to make reference to students trouble/stress/fear as 'whining', I would ask that you be a better person and show the same empathy/compassion for them as you are clearly asking for the coordinators as opposed to gloating
