This forum is provided to promote discussion amongst students enrolled in CITS3007 Secure Coding. If posting a question, it's suggested you check first whether your question is answered in the unit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list, and use the search box (on the right) to see if an answer to your question has already been posted.

Please consider offering answers and suggestions to help other students! And if you fix a problem by following a suggestion here, it would be great if other interested students could see a short "Great, fixed it!"  followup message.

Note that any posts must comply with the UWA Code of Conduct and the UWA Academic Conduct Policy. That means you should (a) treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and (b) not post your solutions to an assessment that's in progress.

If asking a programming question, it's recommended you read How do I ask a good question? If reporting or troubleshooting a bug in software used in the unit, it's recommend you read How to report bugs effectively.

Hi Arran, I'd like to clarify what resources we have available to us for the exam. Hearing from a student that previously took this unit, they seemed to imply that they were able to compile their code using an IDE (specifically VS Code) during the exam. Will we have access to IDEs in the exam? Or are we limited to only what's provided in Moodle? Cheers!

Hi,

The exam won't have any questions requiring you to use a compiler or IDE (unlike the quiz and mid-semester test, which were open-book, and encouraged you to make use of a compiler or IDE, and did have questions where information about e.g. data type sizes was needed).

The only permitted materials are listed on the Assessments page, here:

  • a printed or hand-written A4 page of notes (written both sides).
  • copies of the lecture slides and lab worksheets (although not the lab solutions). These will be downloadable from Moodle during the exam.
  • a PDF copy of the draft C11 standard. This will be downloadable from Moodle during the exam.

The use of any other resources, including any software other than the web browser is not permitted.

Last year's exam did permit use of a compiler or IDE, but the versions on lab machines are different to the standard CITS3007 ones, so I think trying to use them probably caused more problems than was worthwhile. Additionally, it's easier to invigilate an exam if the rules are kept simple - no software other than the browser.

I hope that helps!

Cheers

Arran
