lec # wk 10 File Attributes - Square Bracket command external or internal

The lecture states that historically the shell didn't have many things built into it, 
like the square bracket command and ls. In modern times, does the square bracket 
command now sit within the shell? - or is it still external. I wonder because it 
looked like it was external, sitting in the /bin directory. Thanks.
