Hi, Similarly to contractions (possessives), a compound word must have hyphen between two simple words. (Remember, simple word can have only one letter.) As for having it in the spec, I think (hope) you'll find that they are already in the definitions in the. The only extension of the spec is the situation of '- as in pickin'-up, which is both a contraction and and a compound word. Bottom line, if it's not in the spec, it's not to be counted.
