Please consider offering answers and suggestions to help other students! And if you fix a problem by following a suggestion here, it would be great if other interested students could see a short "Great, fixed it!"  followup message.

Hi everyone,

I mentioned in lectures that due to the large class size this year (280 students) and the fact that this would be the first CITS5501 exam run on students' own devices (as the labs now have no computers), there might be a change of exam and mid-semester test format.

I can confirm now that the exam will be paper-based. Unfortunately, running a "BYO device" exam while ensuring exam integrity is beyond our current resources.

For the exam, you'll be allowed to bring in a single A4 page of notes, but no other materials. I'll go over the exam format in more detail in lectures.

The format of the mid-semester test will remain the same: it will be a Moodle-based test and will take place the week after the mid-semester break.

I'll update the CITS5501 website by next week to reflect the changed exam format. Once that's done, if you have any queries about it, feel free to post here and let me know.

Cheers

Arran

Hi Arran,

Obviously the exam is a long way away still but I thought I'll mention it now. The unit page mentions for the Moodle exam that "However, the labs and earlier quizzes and tests provide a good guide to the sort of questions you may be asked."

As the exam will be paper based and perhaps will include different sorts of questions, would it be possible to have an example later on of the styles of questions that might be asked as we can't fully refer to the Moodle quizzes.

This is under the assumption that the format is different enough from the Moodle for it to make sense to provide an example.

Thanks

Hi,

The paper-based exam will have no multiple choice/short answer questions, but other than that, the labs and the mid-semester test are still a good guide to the sorts of tasks you might be asked to do.

If you look at the "Assessments" page on the CITS5501 website, you'll see that under "Past exam papers", there is already information on where you can find examples of the styles of questions that might be asked.

Cheers

Arran
