This forum is provided to promote discussion amongst students enrolled in CITS5501 Software Testing and Quality Assurance. If posting a question, it's suggested you check first whether your question is answered in the unit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list, and use the search box (on the right) to see if an answer to your question has already been posted.

Please consider offering answers and suggestions to help other students! And if you fix a problem by following a suggestion here, it would be great if other interested students could see a short "Great, fixed it!"  followup message.

Note that any posts must comply with the UWA Code of Conduct and the UWA Academic Conduct Policy. That means you should (a) treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and (b) not post your solutions to an assessment that's in progress.

If asking a programming question, it's recommended you read How do I ask a good question? If reporting or troubleshooting a bug in software used in the unit, it's recommend you read How to report bugs effectively.

Hi all,

Welcome to CITS5501 Software Testing and Quality Assurance. I'm your Unit Coordinator, Arran Stewart.

The first lecture of the unit is tomorrow, Tuesday 23 July at 11 am in the Robert Street lecture theatre (see the unit website for more details). Note that labs don't start until week two (see the unit schedule for details).

Teaching materials

Teaching material for the unit will be available through the unit website at:

    https://cits5501.github.io/

Plus there will occasionally be (unassessed) exercises on Moodle, which is also where assessments will be submitted.

You won't need to visit UWA's Blackboard LMS to obtain teaching materials – you'll only need to visit the LMS to access lecture recordings, if you need them.

Weekly teaching activities

Details of the weekly teaching activities are listed on the unit website, but to recap:

  • Lectures. There's a 1 hour, 50 minute face-to-face lecture each week on Tuesday.

  • Labs. From week 2, there'll normally be a lab sheet of practice exercises to attempt each week. There'll be several "standard exercises", and potentially some more difficult "challenge exercises" (which are there as an extra challenge for students who might already have some familiarity with the material – not everybody is expected to attempt them, and solutions will not necessarily be provided).

Sample solutions to the standard exercises will be provided the following week. If you can complete the standard exercises, then that's a good sign you're keeping up with the unit material.

Assessment

Dates and details for the assessments are on the unit website, but to summarize: the unit is assessed through an online quiz, an online mid-semester test, a practical project and a final exam. All assessments are to be undertaken individually.

Schedule

The unit schedule can be found at https://cits5501.github.io/schedule/.

Announcements

All unit announcements will be made here on the help5501 forum, and we will assume you are checking this forum regularly (at least once a week). You can subscribe to email announcements of what has been posted on the forum by clicking the 'help5501' menu in the top left of this page, then 'edit preferences', choosing your subscription preferences, then clicking 'save'.

Emergency announcements (e.g. sudden timetable or venue changes) will also get sent out via email using the LMS.

Getting Help

If you have questions, please feel free to post here in the help5501 forum! Also, feel free to answer other students' questions if you know the answer.

If you require personal communication with the unit coordinator, please use the details listed on the unit website.
