(a reminder that this is an 'ideal' situation, one striving to make the index-file as small as possible). If you store each word only once overall, along with the files in which it occurs then, when searching for any word, you just determine if it exists in the index (at all) and, if it does, list its filenames. Your next question will likely be "how do I avoid storing the filenames multiple times?" Turn that question around and ask "if I store each filename only once, how can I efficiently reference them from 'each word'?"
