Hmmm, I've just remembered the getconf program on both Linux and macOS. On my Ubuntu system, getconf ARG_MAX reports 2097152, and on my shiny new macOS M2 it reports 1048576. But don't try to determine or use those values - dynamically allocate the required amount of memory.
